13. How does Staff Accounting Bulletin 101 (SAB 101) affect Genus?

As required, Genus implemented accounting practices under SAB 101 in the fourth quarter of 2000 and restated that entire year in the Annual Report on Form 10-K. While this accounting rule has a significant effect on the way Genus recognizes revenue, it has no real impact on the day-to-day operation of the business. SAB 101 stipulates that revenue can only be recognized upon final acceptance of product by the customer. In the past, the industry had traditionally recognized revenues when a product shipped and the customer took possession of it. Under SAB 101, these shipments are classified on the balance sheet as deferred revenue until customer acceptance occurs, and the product costs associated with the additional inventory are classified on the balance sheet as inventory. For investors, the balance sheet under SAB 101 looks different than it had under the previous pro forma method, but the business operations are unaffected.
