Genus Wins ALD Repeat Order From Leading Data Storage Company

Sunnyvale, Calif.-November 13, 2002-Genus, Inc's (Nasdaq: GGNS) market diversification strategy again paid dividends today as the company announced an order for an atomic layer deposition (ALD) system from a leading data storage manufacturer. The LYNX2® ALD system represents yet another repeat order for Genus' leading ALD technology following last month's announcement of a repeat order from the Japanese semiconductor consortium, Selete. The system will be used in volume production of thin film heads (TFH).

"This order is another indication of the positive performance of our installed ALD modules and is a great result for Genus as we build up sales momentum in this quarter," stated Bill Elder, chairman and CEO, Genus, Inc. "Not only is it a sign of tool quality, but equally as important, it is a positive demonstration of our ability to deliver and support our customers."

In late 2000, as part of its multi-phase ALD commercialization plan, Genus announced its plan to target its ALD technology at TFH applications, attempting to diversify markets served and lessen the company's revenue reliance upon semiconductor equipment. To date, Genus has sold ALD systems to three of the top four data storage manufacturers, and earlier this year, qualified its ALD for production in TFH manufacturing. Genus' ALD has since gone into volume production in the TFH market.

Werner Rust, Genus' vice president of sales and marketing commented, "The TFH business has been very good for Genus. Not only is it a valuable source of income for the company when other markets are down, but it also has given us a unique opportunity to hone our skills in a production environment. In return, and with our support, our TFH customers have extended their current manufacturing process beyond what was possible with other deposition techniques, in addition to experiencing greater yields at a lower cost of ownership."
