Genus Announces First Quarter Results

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (April 27, 2000) – Genus, Inc. (Nasdaq: GGNS) announced profitable results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2000. The company recorded net sales of $12.3 million, compared with $6.0 million for the first quarter of 1999. Net income for the first quarter of 2000 was $971,000 or $0.05 per share, compared to net loss of $611,000 or $0.03 per share for the same quarter of 1999.

Revenues for the first quarter were more than double that of the fourth quarter of 1999. In addition, gross profit margins increased to 44.5 percent in the first quarter of 2000, the highest in the Company since 1989.

"This was the most successful quarter financially for Genus since the company refocused on thin film products in 1998," said Dr. William W.R. Elder, Genus' chairman and CEO. "As expected, revenue and profits exceeded our original plan, and with bookings in excess of $19 million for the second consecutive quarter, we have all of the second and most of the third quarter's system requirements in backlog."
